This is the story of a ranching family in modern Montana. The father and son are quite a bit alike, both are strong willed and stubborn. The boy gets himself and the family into trouble by doing things his way even after being told not to. The first major accident in the movie results in the boy's horse getting a broken back, and the boy has to shot his horse. The second major accident is the result of the father giving in and letting the boy do something which the father knows is unsafe. This accident results in the boy getting a broken back and being paralyzed from the naval down. This happens at a time when the family is already in such bad financial shape that they might lose the ranch, even without the additional medical bills.
Despite the tragic nature of the plot, the movie was quite entertaining. It is, in fact, the tragic circumstances that bring the family together and help them to express the love they have for each other.

Technically there is one nude scene in this movie when the boy slips in the bath tub after being paralyzed and his mother must help him out of the tub. The boy is only seen only from the side for a few seconds.
